Anthony Michael Hall Reflects on “National Lampoon’s Vacation” Reunion
Anthony Michael Hall recently shared memories from his experience filming “National Lampoon’s Vacation” alongside Chevy Chase over four decades ago.
During a cast reunion at Fan Expo Chicago on August 17th, Hall, who played Rusty Griswold, recalled an amusing yet slightly awkward interaction with Chase, who portrayed Clark Griswold. He mentioned how Chase teased him about the changes he underwent between the initial filming and re-shoots six months later.
“Puberance was kicked for me,” Hall reflected, noting that he had grown significantly taller and felt more like a different kid. “I really felt better on set,” he added, glancing at Chase.
The camaraderie didn’t stop there. Hall reminisced fondly about the autographs Chase had given him during filming. “I remember the notes you wrote to me when we wrapped,” Hall recalled. “You called me the usual Robbie Benson.” He chuckled, adding, “If you’re blind, you’re doing it right,” referencing one of Chase’s playful quips.
Dana Baron, who portrayed Audrey Griswold, also joined in the nostalgia, reminding Hall about some of the teasing from the older comedian. “By the way, you’ve forgotten your acne,” she quipped, referencing comments of Chase about Hall’s teenage skin.
Yet, Hall clarified there were no hard feelings. “This is why I’ve loved being your son for 40 years,” he concluded warmly. “I love you.”
Following their adventure in “National Lampoon Vacation” in 1983, Hall went on to star in several beloved John Hughes films, such as “16 Candles” and “The Breakfast Club.”
The original “Vacation” movie follows the Griswold family on a chaotic road trip to the fictional theme park Wally World, filled with humorous mishaps along the way.
The reunion, which brought together cast members from various “Vacation” films, ended on a high note, with Chase expressing his joy about reconnecting with former co-stars. He shared his experience on social media, saying, “Amazing time in Chicago last weekend with old friends and new friends,” along with a behind-the-scenes video.
Chase also revealed plans for an eight-show tour to celebrate “Christmas Holiday” from late October to mid-December.
