Tragic Death of Law Student Due to Allergic Reaction During Scan

A 22-year-old law student tragically passed away after experiencing a severe allergic reaction during a routine medical procedure.

Leticia Paul was undergoing a contrast-enhanced CT scan at the Alto Valle Regional Hospital in Rio do Sul, Brazil, when she went into anaphylactic shock, according to local news reports.

The reaction was triggered by the contrast fluid injected into her body prior to the scan.

Despite immediate intubation, she unfortunately died less than a day after the procedure. Her aunt, Sandra Paul, shared the sad news with G1.

It was noted that Leticia had a history of kidney stones, which led to the need for the CT scan—a process that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to create detailed images of the body.

Having recently obtained a law degree from Colegio Sinodal Ruy Barbosa, she was furthering her studies in Law and Real Estate.

Her educational institution expressed their condolences to the family, wishing them strength during this difficult time.

The Alto Valle Regional Hospital released a statement expressing regret over her passing and emphasized their commitment to safety, stating that all procedures comply with clinical protocols.

Generally, iodinated contrast is used in CT scans, MRIs, and X-rays to enhance the visibility of organs and tissues. Though considered safe, severe allergic reactions are rare, occurring in about one in 5,000 to 10,000 cases. Most people will only experience mild symptoms, such as warmth, nausea, or itching following an IV injection.
