Edmonton Oilers Part Ways with Coach Kris Knoblauch

It was widely anticipated, yet it still feels surprising that the Edmonton Oilers have decided to part ways with head coach Kris Knoblauch, especially after reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in both 2024 and 2025.

Reports indicated that discussions between the Oilers and Las Vegas Golden Knights regarding their head coach, Bruce Cassidy, were being blocked, making the decision to let Knoblauch go more pronounced.

This move underscores the increasingly short tenures of NHL coaches. It seems that the Oilers’ front office wanted to send a clear message to their star player, Connor McDavid, about their commitment to improving the team’s performance.

McDavid is about to sign a new two-year “show me” contract, but it feels more like he has just one season to demonstrate that the path to a championship is still viable.

Making a decisive coaching change was the first step in that direction.

Knoblauch has a history with McDavid; he coached him during his junior days. After taking over the Oilers midway through the 2023-24 season, he guided them through a rebuilding phase that ended with a loss to the Florida Panthers in the Finals.

Last season ended similarly, with another defeat to Florida, and this year saw the Oilers exit in the first round against the Anaheim Ducks.

In the past, coaches like Knoblauch might have been afforded at least another year to prove themselves, especially after such close calls. But the current landscape seems less forgiving; teams no longer hesitate to make aggressive moves when it comes to coaching.

However, coaching isn’t the only issue facing the Oilers this summer. One major concern that has persisted throughout the McDavid era is the lack of depth on the roster.

While McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are producing impressive numbers, with McDavid hitting 138 points this season, the drop-off is alarming after the top players. Draisaitl scored 97, and Evan Bouchard contributed 95 points, but the next closest scorer, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, sits at just 57 points.

Sure, McDavid is an extraordinary talent, but he can only play around 22 minutes per game. The rest of the team needs to contribute significantly during the remaining time.

Now, strong goaltending can help cover some flaws, but this season, the Oilers’ primary goalie, Connor Ingraham, recorded an .899 save percentage alongside a 2.60 GAA, which isn’t ideal.

While firing Knoblauch might shake things up, it’s clear that more changes are necessary this offseason.

And for McDavid, it’s definitely something to keep on his radar.
