Challenges for Democrats

Democrats have been navigating a tough landscape, struggling to find messages that truly connect with their base. Recently, at the Summer meeting of the Democratic National Committee, it became clear that this has been a recurring theme over the years.

DNC Chair Ken Martin kicked off the meeting by introducing a speaker from the Saginaw Nation to deliver a recognition speech.

“And in many ways we still live in a system built to restrain the cultural and spiritual history of Indigenous peoples.”

Lindy Saumic, who serves as the treasurer of the Minnesota Democratic Party and identifies as an “Indigenous Woman,” began the meeting with a land acknowledgment.

“Good morning, DNC members, friends, relatives. Let’s pause to consider the land. The DNC pays tribute to the Dakota Oyate, the original guardians of the land and waters of Minneapolis. This land suffers from a history of unkept treaties and commitments. Essentially, we still reside in a framework designed to undermine the cultural and spiritual narratives of Indigenous peoples.”

Interestingly, some have commented that a redesign of the Minnesota flag resembles the national flag of Somalia.

Saumic continued, urging members to take the matter of land acknowledgment seriously: “As a Democrat, I implore you not to treat this land acknowledgment as just a formality. Ask questions, engage with our Indigenous neighbors, and foster partnerships with Indigenous communities. It’s vital to respect both this land and its historical significance through integrity, humility, and compassion.”

The Democratic-led initiative has long pushed back against the negative portrayal of “settlers.” There are ongoing discussions about changing the status of the flag to remove references that evoke colonial imagery.

Monday marked the start of a three-day DNC Summer Meeting in Minneapolis.
