Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook addresses Trump: 'I will not step down'

Federal Reserve Governor Responds to Trump’s Attempt to Fire Her

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has firmly asserted her position after President Trump attempted to dismiss her following a mortgage fraud allegation linked to a board member’s firing on Monday.

In her statement, Cook emphasized that the president “has no authority” to remove her. “He claimed he would fire me ‘for a cause’ when no legitimate cause exists under the law. I will not resign,” she declared.

Cook pointed out that her office would continue its mission to bolster the U.S. economy, a commitment she has upheld since her appointment in 2022.

Trump’s call for her resignation came after allegations were made by Bill Prute, the director of the Federal Housing and Finance Agency, who is an ally of the president. Should she not resign, Trump expressed intentions to pursue her removal.

Prute’s claims included a document showing a signature purportedly belonging to Cook, alongside discrepancies linked to major housing developments in Michigan and a project termed “Atlanta Condominiums.”

While the president does hold the authority to dismiss Federal Reserve members for cause, it remains uncertain if the allegations against Cook will fulfill that requirement.

In a letter to Cook shared on Truth Society, Trump stated, “I have decided that there is a good reason to remove you from your position.” He elaborated on the Federal Reserve’s critical role in setting interest rates, asserting that the public needs to trust its members.

He expressed a lack of confidence in Cook’s integrity, citing “deceitful and potentially criminal conduct in financial matters.”

Cook has retained Abbe Lowell, a noted attorney in Washington, to represent her. Lowell criticized Trump’s approach, asserting that “once again, firing with a tweet” lacks proper judicial process. He expressed commitment to take necessary actions against what he described as Trump’s attempts to carry out illegal activities.
