Trump’s Attempt to Fire Federal Reserve Governor Sparks Outcry
The leader of the Democrats has quickly criticized President Trump’s move to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, labeling it an authoritarian act that jeopardizes the independence of the U.S. central bank.
“This is just another part of Trump’s partisan antics, attempting to manipulate the economy in favor of wealthy donors at the cost of regular Americans,” he contended.
He further expressed concern that Trump is toying with a critical aspect of the economy, asserting that such actions could undermine the Fed’s independence and threaten the financial security of everyday citizens.
A prominent Senate Democrat warned that this power grab could have lasting negative effects on the economy at national, state, and local levels.
Trump recently dismissed Cook, the first Black woman appointed to the Federal Reserve Board by former President Biden in 2022, citing allegations of mortgage fraud. Cook has denied any wrongdoing.
Despite Trump’s claims that Cook’s firing was immediate, her legal team argues he lacks the authority to dismiss her. Cook’s term is set to last until January 2038.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries asserted that Trump’s actions lacked credible evidence of any misconduct on Cook’s part.
“It’s ironic,” said Jeffries, “to see finger-pointing at others for alleged fraudulent behavior when it starts at the White House itself.” He noted that Americans are not fooled by unfounded claims against public servants.
Senator Elizabeth Warren remarked that Trump is using Cook as a “scapegoat.” She believes a legal challenge against his actions will likely succeed in a court that upholds the law.
Senator Ruben Gallego expressed concerns over the potential erosion of global confidence in the U.S. financial system due to political pressures, questioning why anyone would want to invest when such threats exist.
Meanwhile, Representative Jerry Nadler described Trump’s actions as reckless and said they could jeopardize financial stability and the livelihoods of millions, calling for immediate legal intervention to contest this move.
