Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu Discusses Midterm Challenges on CBS “Face the Nation”

On “Face the Nation,” host Margaret Brennan confronted Democratic Representative Ted Lieu about the party’s strategies, particularly regarding the recent midterm elections. She pointed out that Democrats seemed to struggle with the message surrounding the prolonged shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security, suggesting they “lost” that battle.

Brennan asked Lieu if he still believed that the Democrats could reclaim the House, inquiring further about their primary message. Lieu responded that the American electorate had voted for Donald Trump in hopes of reduced costs, but he expressed that Trump had misled them. He noted rising inflation and gas prices, attributing these increases to Trump’s tariffs that have burdened consumers. Lieu emphasized that many Americans are overwhelmed by debt and financial responsibilities, while Democrats aim to lower healthcare and energy costs. That’s their core message, apparently.

Brennan interjected with skepticism, pointing out that Democrats previously shut down the government to negotiate healthcare issues but didn’t achieve policy concessions, resulting in increased premiums. She remarked on their apparent inability to win that fight.

Democrats’ Messaging Struggles Amid Ongoing Stalemate

In response, Lieu mentioned that the House had passed a three-year extension for Affordable Care Act tax credits, urging the Senate to follow suit. He added that if they regained control, they would repeal the substantial cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and ACA funding made by Trump and the Republicans.

Trump’s Actions Lead to Funding Issues for DHS

Furthermore, the DHS shutdown commenced on February 14, and on April 30, Trump signed a bill to provide significant funding for the department, ultimately ending a historic 75-day lapse. However, it’s worth noting that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) currently remain without funding per existing laws.
