Hochul Discusses National Guard Threat from Trump
Governor Kathy Hochul recently addressed President Trump’s suggestion of deploying the National Guard to New York. This conversation took place “a few days ago,” but she didn’t provide much information on whether New York City would see a military presence like Washington, D.C.
With a slight shrug, she remarked, “I don’t know what he’s going to do.” Many have criticized Trump’s claims as overblown, yet he has previously sent the National Guard in response to escalating crime rates.
Interestingly, Hochul had her own National Guard activated in the subway system, and she hinted that she subtly advised Trump against similar military actions. “I was very elegant,” she noted, recalling her words to Trump: “What will I tell you, President, if you think you need help from the National Guard about what I’m already doing? I know where to find them.”
She emphasized that crime is decreasing in New York, stating, “The NYPD is doing their job.” Hochul also criticized Trump’s executive orders aimed at stopping cashless bail, which seem to target New York specifically.
Despite the contentious bail reforms enacted in 2019 by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, Hochul argued that serious crimes like murder and rape still carry significant bail requirements. “The president is wrong. He is wrong,” she asserted, clarifying that New York does not have cashless bail.
Hochul expressed her opinion on Trump’s understanding of state laws, claiming, “He has no concept of how our laws work here… he’s just trying to throw gasoline on the fire.” She suggested that Trump is perhaps trying to stoke tensions in a blue state under a Democratic governor, hinting this may be part of a broader strategy to create political confusion.
