DJ Daniel is appointed as honorary deputy mayor for public safety by Eric Adams

Deputy Mayor of Public Security Sworn In

On Tuesday morning, Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel was officially sworn in as the Deputy Mayor of Public Safety in New York City. This 13-year-old, a cancer survivor, has certainly made headlines, notably during President Donald Trump’s joint speech to Congress earlier this year.

“I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t with Dad,” Daniel remarked during the ceremony, which Mayor Eric Adams hinted might see the current Vice Mayor, Kazu Daughtry, stepping back from his public safety role.

In a somewhat humorous tone, Daughtry quipped about Daniel taking his place as “honorary vice mayor for public safety.” It’s a notable moment, especially given recent indictments involving associates of Adams’ office.

Earlier this year, Adams had celebrated Daniel’s achievement of a Guinness World Record for being sworn into over 1,350 law enforcement agencies, including a recent role with the New York City Police Department.

Daniel first gained national attention when he was appointed as an honorary secret service agent. His father, Theodis, has recently announced his run for Texas’ 18th Congressional District, adding to the family’s public profile.

The mayor emphasized the need for courage and commitment in leadership roles, noting Daniel’s remarkable experience. Shortly after the oath ceremony, Daniel was presented with a “Vice Mayor DJ” uniform and a declaration celebrating his new role. He shared how he had fought through challenging health battles since being diagnosed with terminal brain and spinal cancer at just six years old.

In his speech, Trump praised Daniel, calling him “a young man who truly loves our police.” With visits planned to iconic locations like the Empire State Building, Daniel’s journey and new responsibilities are certainly capturing public interest.
