Illegal Immigrant Injures Federal Officer During Arrest in Florida
A 21-year-old illegal immigrant, Dennis Collia Miranda, was arrested in Polk County, Florida, after allegedly injuring a federal officer during an altercation. This incident took place on Tuesday when two Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents attempted to detain Miranda in Lakeland.
According to officials, one of the agents suffered a serious shoulder injury as Miranda resisted arrest. Sheriff Grady Judd noted during a press conference that this marks the first time an agent in the county has been harmed while on duty.
“Now, taxpayers in Florida and Polk will have to pay for this,” he remarked, highlighting the repercussions of such incidents.
Details of the Incident
Following the struggle, Miranda managed to flee into nearby woods, prompting an extensive search involving helicopters and drones. Eventually, law enforcement located him at a dock. Judd mentioned that although Miranda was unarmed, he fought back, possibly because he felt he was not going to be deported. This escalation led to his later arrest.
Miranda is facing multiple charges, including resisting arrest and battery against a federal officer. Judd indicated that the state would need to provide Miranda with legal representation, and he will likely be indicted soon. In 2024, Miranda had been arrested for a DUI and failed to appear in court, leaving an outstanding warrant.
“The system is broken,” Judd commented, suggesting that if Miranda had been properly managed under the federal government’s “catch and release” protocol in 2021, this situation might have been avoided.
Possible Consequences
Miranda’s history reveals a connection to robbery in Polk County, and he could face time in state prison. Should he be released, he would then be deported. This case reflects ongoing discussions about immigration enforcement and its challenges.
