Reasons Valtteri Bottas can't begin in the top position for his Cadillac F1 debut

Valtteri Bottas’ Potential Return to Formula 1

Picture this: Valtteri Bottas makes a surprising comeback to Formula 1 next spring, joining the new Cadillac team and somehow clinching pole position for the Australian Grand Prix. It sounds like a plot twist you might find in a sequel to an F1 movie, right? Well, perhaps it’s not as far-fetched as it seems.

Getting pole position in the first race is already a big deal for any new team, but, intriguingly, Bottas might face obstacles that prevent him from starting in first place. So, what went down in his last race?

In the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Bottas, driving for Sauber, had a tumultuous ending to his time with the team. He was involved in two incidents that caused collisions. The first occurred early in the race with his new teammate, Sergio Perez. Later, he collided with Kevin Magnussen in turn six.

As a result, Bottas received a 10-second penalty and some points on his FIA Super License for his first incident. The second penalty was even steeper; race officials decided on a drive-through penalty after his second mishap. But since Bottas had already retired from that race, this penalty turned into a fifth-place grid drop for his next race. Now he has three penalty points on his license.

Currently, Bottas is in a backup driver role, meaning his next competitive outing will likely be the opening race of the upcoming season with Cadillac. This means that, theoretically, even if he does pull a rabbit out of the hat and qualifies first, he would actually only be able to start from sixth position.

Meanwhile, changes in the FIA Sports Regulations are set to take effect with the 2026 season, aiming to address issues regarding grid penalties. The new rule will let stewards impose a penalty based on a driver’s situation over the next 12 months. This could potentially clean up grid penalties for drivers who, like Bottas, find themselves sitting out races for a while.

However, Bottas won’t be able to take advantage of these changes. While he may not kick off his Cadillac career with a bang, he still managed to create a headline-worthy story.
