Emma Heming Willis Discusses Bruce Willis’ Health Journey
Emma Heming Willis recently opened up about her husband, Bruce Willis, and his health. In a special on ABC titled “Emma & Bruce Willis: An Unexpected Journey,” she shared her experiences following Bruce’s diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia.
During her conversation with Diane Sawyer, Emma mentioned how challenging it was to recall the time of Bruce’s diagnosis, noting it all felt a bit hazy. She remembered that Bruce, who had always been active, particularly enjoyed doing school runs with their daughters. When he began to skip those moments, that struck her as unusual. Instead of discussing her concerns with him outright, Emma decided to take a more subtle approach to address the changes.
In a moment of reflection, Emma conveyed how she felt “lost and isolated” while caring for Bruce amid his crucial diagnosis. She noticed signs long before his official diagnosis, particularly when his generally warm demeanor started to shift. “He used to be so engaging and talkative. Then, suddenly, there was this distance, it felt cold,” she expressed.
Emma described how Bruce sometimes seemed unaware of his surroundings and how that was worrisome for her. She wondered if his changes in health were partly due to past experiences, like the effects of shooting guns without proper ear protection. “It blew away most of his hearing,” she recounted. Communication became a struggle; Emma often felt he didn’t hear her properly, creating a sense of disconnect in their relationship.
In the confusing early days of Bruce’s illness, she found herself questioning whether their marriage was truly the same. After asking Bruce how he was feeling, she recalled, “His response was pretty brush-off.” It was just… complicated.
In March 2022, it was revealed that Bruce stepped away from acting due to his struggles with aphasia, and later admitted to the grim diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a condition that affects neurons in certain parts of the brain and can lead to various behavioral and communication issues.
Emma vividly remembered the doctor’s words when they learned there was no cure for Bruce’s condition, and that moment sent her into a panic. “I just felt lost, like I couldn’t grasp the reality of it,” she recalled, her emotions surfacing during the interview.
Reflecting on moments of levity with Bruce, Emma mentioned how his genuine laughter is something she cherishes deeply, even as it seems to fade. “It’s tough to confront, but I’m grateful he’s still here,” she added.
Emma is set to publish her book, “Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Self,” which she dedicated to Bruce and their daughters. Reading the dedication brought tears to her eyes as she spoke about their shared journey and the challenges they face.
Emma had been open with their daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, about Bruce’s health condition, ensuring they understood what was happening. She observed that, while Bruce’s health may be declining, “he’s still very mobile and his overall health is decent.” There are moments when he lights up in their presence, reassuring her that he still recognizes and connects with them.
One significant decision Emma faced was to move Bruce to a one-story house where he could live with a caregiver. She said it was important for their daughters to have a nurturing home environment, focusing on their needs. “He wanted them to feel at home, filled with warmth and laughter,” she noted.
After sharing more insights about their family dynamics, Emma concluded with her hopes of understanding Bruce’s feelings, wishing for open conversations about his state. “I want to know how he’s truly feeling, and if there’s anything more I can do for him,” she said. Despite the challenges, the love and commitment remain strong as they navigate this unexpected journey together.
