Trump Increases Pressure on Major Ally to Purchase Russian Oil

Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on India Over Russian Oil Imports

President Donald Trump has followed through on his commitment to impose 50% tariffs on India due to its ongoing importation of oil and gas from Russia.

These tariffs are now among the highest applied to any U.S. trading partner since the deadline set by Trump, which was 21 days, passed on August 6. Notably, India remains a significant buyer of Russian oil, reportedly importing around 1.75 million barrels per day from January to June 2025.

This action has sparked considerable protests within India, with many expressing concerns that the tariffs could harm the existing bilateral relations. The White House and India’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not made any statements in response to inquiries.

The Trump administration aims to economically pressure Russia in hopes of encouraging President Vladimir Putin to pursue peace discussions. Additionally, the U.S. has indicated it may impose secondary tariffs on those purchasing key Russian goods.

Initially, a 25% tariff was applied to India on July 30, before escalating to the current 50% on August 6. Trump previously articulated on social media his belief that India should refrain from buying Russian oil, particularly as the international community seeks to end the violence in Ukraine.

Experts caution that India faces challenges in rapidly reducing its reliance on Russian oil, and these tariffs may strain the U.S.-India relationship. In 2024, the trade volume between the two countries reached $212.3 billion, marking an over 8% increase from the previous year, according to data from the U.S. Trade Representatives.

Trump has been critical of India’s trade policies, particularly since 2019, citing an imbalance that he finds unfavorable to American interests.
