Buster Skrine taken into custody for suspected financial fraud scheme

Former Jets defensive back Daryl “Buster” Skrine was taken into custody by authorities in Georgia on Wednesday, facing a total of 18 charges related to financial fraud.

The 36-year-old was charged with several offenses including criminal fraud, identity fraud, and financial transaction card fraud, as reported from Roswell, Georgia.

Allegedly, Skrine targeted three women from Wisconsin, North Carolina, and New York using a dating app, convincing them to send money with the false promise of paying off their NFL pensions.

It’s estimated that Skrine amassed nearly $300,000, which he reportedly used to fund a lavish lifestyle that included Airbnbs, travel, and purchasing gift cards. Authorities believe there may be more victims connected to his alleged schemes.

Skrine had been wanted by Canadian law enforcement since May 2024, following an earlier arrest at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport in 2023 for opening a bank account using fake checks and withdrawing $100,000.

According to Durham police, Skrine was transferred to the Saskatchewan Corrections Centre last April, granted bail with the requirement of wearing a GPS monitor. However, in May, he missed court dates and his tracking device went offline.

Authorities in Roswell have stated they will coordinate with Canadian officials to address the allegations against Skrine in both countries.

Skrine was drafted by the Browns in 2011 and joined the Jets before the 2015 season, where he spent four years, accumulating three interceptions and 30 passes defended. His NFL career, which lasted 12 years, earned him an estimated $40 million.

He last played in the NFL in 2021 with the Titans.
