Trump criticizes 'unconstitutional' court ruling on redistricting in Utah

President Trump criticized a recent ruling that mandates Utah to redraw its Congressional districts, calling it “absolutely unconstitutional.” This statement came during the ongoing nationwide debate over redistricting.

He expressed his discontent via a social media post, questioning how a Republican state like Utah could be affected by what he described as “radical left judges.” Trump remarked that all Utah citizens should be outraged by the judiciary’s activism which he believes seeks to manipulate Congressional representation. He noted his significant electoral victories in Utah.

District Judge Deanna Gibson ruled that the GOP-majority state legislature’s current map violates protections against partisan gerrymandering and must be redesigned ahead of the upcoming mid-term elections.

Currently, all four of Utah’s Congressional seats are held by Republicans. Depending on the new boundaries, it’s possible that Democrats could secure a position from areas like Blue Salt Lake City.

Rep. Suzanne Delbene, the chair of the Democratic House Campaign Arm, emphasized that the redistricting allows Utah voters to choose representatives who reflect their values rather than allowing politicians to dictate the terms.

The Utah Democrats welcomed the ruling, indicating that they are prepared to mobilize for the upcoming elections.

Conversely, Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) criticized the decision, stating it undermines Utah’s electoral integrity and favors the Democrats. He suggested that this ruling facilitates a more favorable map for the opposition.

In 2018, Utah voters approved an independent commission to oversee redistricting. However, a law enacted in 2020 shifted authority back to legislators, sidelining the commission’s recommendations.

Gibson ruled that lawmakers had disregarded the will of the voters in shaping the current map, defining this as a violation of constitutional standards.

The judge has provided a deadline of September 24th for lawmakers to submit revised maps. This ruling is part of a larger trend of contentious redistricting battles happening across the nation.

In Texas, Republican strategies have spurred California Democrats to devise plans to counteract GOP advantages. States like Ohio, Florida, Indiana, and Missouri are also making moves to reassess their district lines.

With a narrow Republican majority in the House, any shifts in district boundaries could significantly impact control during next year’s elections.
