Child Rescued from New Jersey House Fire
An 8-year-old boy is recovering after he fell into a police officer while escaping a house fire in New Jersey. This incident occurred early Monday morning when Officer DeWitt Bacon, 33, heard the child’s cries for help. At a press briefing the following day, he recounted the dramatic rescue.
“I rushed to the window, trying to spot him. I yelled for him to get to the window. Honestly, I thought I just had to get him out,” Bacon explained. With flames and smoke billowing from the house, he knew time was of the essence. “I had to break the window quickly and try to get through.”
Reports indicate that the child’s mother had returned home urgently from work upon learning about the fire.
Heroic Actions Recognized
Officer Bacon and fellow police officer John Walsh were acknowledged for their heroism at a City Hall press conference the day after the incident. With only nine firefighters on scene, they managed to catch the child as he jumped from a second-floor window.
This case marks the second rescue of a child from a house fire in Asbury Park within a year. “It highlights the critical importance of timely responses, adequate staffing, and collaboration within the community to save lives,” Bacon remarked.
Images from the firefighters’ union depicted the heavy flames and thick smoke emerging from the house. “It was intense,” someone from the fire department mentioned. The child is expected to recover fully after this harrowing experience.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities and fire stations.
