Concerns Over CDC Leadership Changes
On Wednesday, former Health and Human Services (HHS) Director Xavier Becerra raised alarms about significant public health issues following the resignation of four senior leaders from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Becerra, who was part of the Biden administration, expressed his regret on social media, stating, “I worked with three major CDC scientists who resigned tonight.” He emphasized their crucial role in navigating the country through the pandemic, declaring, “Politicians don’t do science well. Putting politics over public health is dangerous. People will die.”
The resignations included key figures like Deputy Director Debra Houry and doctors Daniel Jernigan, Demetre Daskalakis, and Jennifer Layden, occurring in the wake of CDC Director Susan Monares being fired after a dispute with current HHS Executive Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Monares had only recently been confirmed to her role by the Senate.
Her attorney criticized the termination, stating, “This is not about one official; it’s about the systematic dismantling of public health agencies, the silence of experts, and the dangerous politicization of science.” He warned that this situation undermines the evidence-based health system.
Allegations surfaced that Monares faced blame for not aligning her vaccine policies with President Trump’s health priorities.
Earlier this year, the HHS stirred controversy when Kennedy disbanded the Advisory Committee on Vaccination Practices (ACIP), replacing its members with those opposing COVID-19 measures.
Daskalakis, a former White House adviser, conveyed his concerns in his resignation letter, highlighting that public health extends beyond individual well-being to encompass community, national, and global health. He noted, “People’s health security is at risk and is in the hands of people who focus on ideological self-interest.”
Becerra expressed increasing unease over the future of public health as he predicted more infections in the coming years. “If the CDC doesn’t do that right, a lot of people die. And if you lose your brain talent, a lot of people die,” he remarked in a video accompanying his post. He pointed out that whether dealing with avian flu or other health threats, expertise is essential. “We are in trouble,” he concluded.
