Minnesota authorities share updates on the school shooting: Important points to note

Minnesota officials held a press conference on Thursday afternoon, providing updates on the recent tragic shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school. They discussed the circumstances surrounding the incident, including new information about the injuries sustained and the suspect, 23-year-old Robin Westman.

The event, which resulted in the deaths of two children and left 18 others injured, has deeply affected the nation. Many politicians, regardless of party affiliation, have expressed their condolences and support.

A Minnesota official remarked, “The state is heartbroken. We will face this together—officers, clergy, teachers, and hospital staff are all on the front lines.” This sentiment echoed across social media platforms.

Here’s a summary of important developments shared during the press conference:

Another Child Added to the Injured

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara noted that an additional child was among those injured, information that had not been known during the previous briefing.

“We have one more child who was hurt. They were taken to the hospital in private vehicles, and we received reports after they were treated and released,” O’Hara explained.

116 Rifle Rounds Recovered

O’Hara also reported that in the course of the investigation, around 116 rifle rounds and three shotgun shells were recovered from the scene.

Additionally, one live round from a handgun was found, apparently after the shooter struggled to use it.

Four Search Warrants Executed

Four search warrants have been executed in connection to the case, according to Chief O’Hara.

“Some were carried out at the church and others at residences linked to the suspect,” he detailed, mentioning one house in Minneapolis and another in Litchfield, as well as one in St. Louis Park.

Suspect Expressed Hatred Towards Multiple Groups

U.S. Attorney for Minnesota, Joseph Thompson, indicated that Westman had left behind extensive writings that outline his plans and mental state, reflecting deep-seated hatred.

“He expressed a pure and indiscriminate sort of hatred,” Thompson stated, noting that Westman harbored animosity towards various groups, including Black individuals, Mexicans, Christians, and Jews, suggesting a pervasive sense of hatred.

No Firearms Purchased Illegally

Chief O’Hara confirmed that there is no current evidence indicating that Westman acquired the firearms illegally.
