Ashli Babbitt, a participant in the Jan. 6 events, receives military funeral honors from the Air Force

Ashli Babbitt, who was fatally shot by police during the events of January 6, 2021, has been awarded full military funeral honors by the Air Force, despite the Biden administration’s previous refusal to allow such arrangements.

A letter dated August 15 from Air Force Chief Matthew Romeier reached Babbitt’s family, stating, “On behalf of the Air Force Secretary, I am writing to extend Sra Ashli Babbitt’s offer of military funeral honors.” He noted that he had reconsidered the situation surrounding her death and now believed his earlier decision was mistaken.

This honor marks a significant shift from the Biden administration’s stance in 2021 after the Trump administration had approved veteran burial rights for her.

Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan as a security forces airman, was shot while attempting to enter a barricaded area by climbing through a broken window. There was a lawsuit related to her death, with the family initially seeking $30 million but eventually settling for $5 million.

Her death came amid a chaotic scene as she joined many others in protesting the 2020 presidential election results. Supporters have long sought justice for Babbitt, believing she was unjustly killed.

Retired General Mike Flynn praised the Air Force’s decision to recognize Babbitt’s service, emphasizing how the letter reflects strong leadership. “Ashli Babbitt is now resting in peace, and her family has gained some comfort from the wonderful person she was and the truth she represents for all of us,” he remarked.

However, the decision has drawn criticism. Some, like Congressman Adam Kinzinger, argued that honoring Babbitt’s service equates to rewarding a “rebellion” against the country. “Her death is tragic, yes, but for the Air Force to grant her honors is dishonorable,” he expressed.
