Support for Gavin Newsom’s Presidential Aspirations

Gavin Newsom hasn’t officially launched his campaign for the presidency yet, but he does have some significant backing from a wealthy Hollywood investor.

Reed Hastings, co-founder of Netflix, has expressed strong support for Newsom as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. The California governor seems eager to position himself as a unifying figure for the Democratic Party and to challenge the Republican successor to President Donald Trump.

“Gavin is a candidate who can sway both the left and the center,” Hastings remarked.

These comments come as Newsom discreetly begins his presidential path, accumulating millions through his national committee, Campaign for Democracy, while also capturing attention during a book tour of key Democratic primary states.

However, he may encounter some competition from Kamala Harris, another prominent California Democrat, who is currently leading the early polls for 2028.

A recent YouGov survey indicated that 25% of Democrats favored Harris in a virtual primary, with Newsom trailing at 12%. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pete Buttigieg were both at 9%.

Harris, despite her previous presidential run falling short, is still pondering another bid for the White House, although some donors are reportedly cooling on her.

“There’s a huge appetite for new blood, something fresh, something that truly represents the future rather than the past,” mentioned one anonymous fundraiser.

Hastings, a prominent Democratic contributor who had previously supported Harris, now seems to favor Newsom for the presidential race.

He has been one of Newsom’s key donors, having contributed $2 million towards his campaigns.

Last year, Hastings described himself as a “huge fan” of Newsom, highlighting his abilities as a “gifted political strategist and futurist.”
