Anthony Volpe breaks free from a tough streak in Yankees' victory

Chicago – Anthony Volpe’s Progress Amid Struggles

It may not have been the most graceful way to break a slump, but it seems Anthony Volpe’s performance marked a turning point for him.

Entering the game with a dismal 1-37 streak, the Yankees shortstop managed to secure a couple of hits and a sacrifice fly in Thursday night’s 10-4 win against the White Sox. Yet, he also committed another error that contributed to all four runs scored against pitcher Will Warren.

“Hopefully, this will help him turn the corner,” said manager Aaron Boone. “I liked that he ended it with a solid sack fly. After an error in the second inning, he bounced back with a high-quality play. It’s great to see him recover. He’s definitely a crucial part of our team.”

Volpe has been under increasing scrutiny from fans as his difficulties have mounted. He missed consecutive games after being benched, and his numbers have dropped significantly, with 23 at-bats without a hit over his last seven games.

Interestingly, he went 24 games without reaching base on an error on Thursday night but quickly stole second and scored thanks to a single from Ben Rice.

Later on, Volpe snapped his hitting drought, first doubling down the left field line in the fourth inning and then recording another single in the sixth.

“I’m focusing on my approach and staying on the pitch,” Volpe shared. “It’s essential to contribute and support the team for a big win.”

However, he did slip up in the second inning, allowing four runs to score against Warren, tallying his 18th error of the season.

Despite that misstep, Volpe showcased solid defense the rest of the night, making sharp plays, including a key backhanded stop to end the sixth inning.

Boone commented on Volpe’s resilience, noting, “He has that short memory we look for in players. He just keeps going. That trait is vital; overcoming mistakes is crucial in this game.”

Yet, it’s been a frustrating few weeks for Volpe, a once-promising player who finds himself in a significant slump.

“It’s definitely frustrating because you want to produce and help the team,” he expressed. “When you aren’t able to do that, it’s hard. But I feel like I’m getting closer and working through it. I believe I’m swinging well and putting together decent at-bats.”
