Republican senators support Trump deploying troops to democratic cities — even in their own areas.

Senate Republicans are backing President Donald Trump’s aim to deploy the National Guard in cities and states led by Democrats that are grappling with high crime rates. Senator Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, emphasized in a statement that cities like Memphis could really use the help in combating violent crime.

Trump’s intentions appear to echo his prior efforts to address crime in Washington, D.C. This includes sending local police to work with federal agencies, having national police patrol subway areas, and potentially sending troops to cities like Chicago and Baltimore, both known for high crime and Democratic leadership.

The discussions around these proposals have sparked accusations that Democratic senators from Illinois and Maryland are merely engaging in “political theatrics” in D.C. and trying to impose military presence inappropriately. Senator Dick Durbin from Illinois dismissed Trump’s threats regarding the National Guard as mere distractions from his problematic policies.

Durbin suggested that, rather than politicizing Baltimore, Trump should let local and federal law enforcement focus on their critical tasks without interference.

Despite these concerns, Republicans are showing support for Trump’s idea to introduce National Guard presence in their areas after a 30-day window, even considering a more extensive federal role in urban policing.

In places like Memphis, which is Tennessee’s largest city and notoriously has one of the highest crime rates in the country—similar to Baltimore and Chicago—Blackburn expressed her approval for Trump’s proposal to send troops to help manage crime.

She stated her commitment to collaborating with the Trump administration to restore law and order in cities perceived as lawless.

On the other hand, Senator Eric Schmidt from Missouri, representing St. Louis—a city that frequently appears in crime statistics—has also been in discussions about increasing federal resources, including a surge in FBI agents, which he described as significant compared to other regions.

Schmidt seems open to military involvement in St. Louis, criticizing local leaders for allegedly prioritizing the rights of criminals over the safety of victims. He remarked that American families desire to feel secure in their neighborhoods and praised Trump’s law enforcement initiatives, believing they could be beneficial for other cities facing similar issues.
