Tiers for running back backups in 2025 fantasy football

The NFL preseason is wrapping up, and with the roster of 53 finalized, fantasy football drafting is now in full swing. Given how running back positions often evolve, it’s likely that some of the league’s star players will experience setbacks throughout the season. This reality makes having backup or “handcuff” players all the more crucial for fantasy teams.

We’ve already highlighted a few key handcuffs for the 2023 season, but now let’s explore where they might fit in. So, let’s get started.

David Montgomery, Detroit Lions

Montgomery ranks as one of the most valuable handcuffs in the league this year. Teaming up with Jermer Gibbs, referred to as “Sonic and Knuckle,” they share responsibilities in the Lions’ backfield. Gibbs, with his pass-catching abilities, was a top fantasy RB in PPR leagues last season, but Montgomery also made waves, finishing as a top 20 fantasy player himself. He totaled 775 yards and 12 touchdowns over 14 games, and had he not missed three games due to an MCL injury, he might have been in the top 10.

Although stacking both Montgomery and Gibbs would take up two draft picks, the potential rewards could make it worthwhile. If Gibbs were to have an off week, Montgomery could easily step up as a top tailback.

Zach Charbonnet, Seattle Seahawks

Charbonnet starts the season as a backup to Kenneth Walker III in Seattle, but changes could be on the horizon. Coming off an impressive previous season where he ranked as a top 25 fantasy option across all formats, he finished with 569 rushing yards, 340 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns. With Walker dealing with a leg issue during training camp, it wouldn’t be surprising if Charbonnet became the primary RB at some point this season.

Breece Hall, New York Jets

In his second year, Hall stands to gain from a new coaching staff, particularly with former Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand now as offensive coordinator. The Lions run game was potent last season, largely thanks to Montgomery and Gibbs. Hall, while still the starter, may have to watch out for Allen, who has shown promise in camp. As the season progresses, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Allen become the lead back.

Kaleb Johnson, Pittsburgh Steelers

Jalen Warren will kick off the season as Pittsburgh’s starting running back, but rookie Johnson may not take long to challenge for that spot. Standing at 6’1″ and 224 pounds, Johnson has the traditional “bruiser” physique and is noted for his patience and lane finding. With veteran Najee Harris sidelined, Johnson could step into a substantial role, making him a handcuff to keep an eye on.

Tank Bigsby, Jacksonville Jaguars

There’s been talk about the Jaguars potentially trading either Bigsby or Travis Etienne before the season opener against the Panthers, but if neither is moved, they will form a strong 1-2 punch under new head coach Liam Cohen. Bigsby had a solid performance last season, racking up 766 yards and seven touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry. While Etienne remains the starter, Bigsby could see significant touches and may even secure the starting role down the line.

Najee Harris, Los Angeles Chargers

Harris joined the Chargers on a one-year deal and is expected to share time with rookie O’Malion Hampton this year. His offseason eye injury has opened the door for Hampton to possibly take over more snaps during training camp. While there’s hope that eventually both can solidify their roles as RB1, Harris appears ready to contribute significantly in the season opening week.

Jordan Mason, Minnesota Vikings

Mason had a notable impact on the San Francisco 49ers last season, accumulating 789 yards and three touchdowns. Now with the Vikings, he serves as a backup to Aaron Jones. Given that Jones will be 31 later this year, Mason could become a significant player if the coaching staff opts for a 1A/1B approach.

Trevion Henderson, New England Patriots

Henderson has been gaining attention during Patriots training camp, with exciting prospects linked to him. The second-round draft pick is anticipated to be a steal, as he’s shown explosive playmaking ability. Most likely to start the season as a backup to Rhamondre Stevenson, he could become a viable option if the situation changes.

Will Shipley, Philadelphia Eagles

Shipley has made a name for himself during training camp, looking to back up the reigning champions. Though he played as a rookie last season, the depth chart suggests he may receive some extra touches this year. With Saquon Barkley’s heavy workload last year, it’s likely the team will want to lighten that load and provide Shipley opportunities.

Trey Benson, Arizona Cardinals

Benson had a modest role last season with the Cardinals, carrying the ball 63 times for 291 yards and a touchdown. He’s bulked up during the offseason and is poised to be a handcuff for James Connor, who is aging and frequently injured. Benson could be a key backup if Connor struggles to stay healthy.

Tyler Allgeier, Atlanta Falcons
Ray Davis, Buffalo Bills
Brian Robinson Jr., Los Angeles Rams
Blake Corum, Denver Broncos
Zamir White, Las Vegas Raiders
Cam Skattebo, New York Giants
Rachaad White, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Emmanuel Wilson, Green Bay Packers

These handcuffs are well positioned behind entrenched starters and have the potential to step up should injury strike. Allgeier showed that he could effectively back up James Cook last season, and with the injury history of Christian McCaffrey, it may be wise for managers to consider securing either Robinson or Corum.

Judge Hill, Baltimore Ravens
Kyle Monangai, Chicago Bears
Dylan Sampson, Cleveland Browns
Jaylen Wright/Ollie Gordon II, Miami Dolphins
Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs
Jacory Crosskey Merritt, Washington Commanders

This collection of under-the-radar handcuffs could turn out to be valuable, especially for managers willing to take a chance. The Bears are exploring how rookie Monangai could fit behind D’Andre Swift, while the Commanders’ plans for Robinson could allow for a significant role for Merritt if the opportunity arises.
