Calder Trophy Awards This Year
The Calder Trophy, which recognizes the NHL’s Rookie of the Year, often sparks lively discussions owing to its competitive nature. But this time around, things seem a bit different.
Matthew Schaefer, a standout rookie for the Islanders, snagged the award quite decisively.
Schaefer, who was picked first overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, expressed surprise at winning while making an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America” alongside his father. Former Islander Matt Martin, who hosted Schaefer this season, was also there with his family to support him.
The win holds special significance for Schaefer, especially after he faced a personal loss when his mother passed away in 2024. Despite the challenges, he quickly became a vital part of the Islanders’ lineup, although his team struggled as the season progressed.
Notably, Schaefer participated in all 82 games this season and achieved an impressive 59 points (23 goals, 36 assists) as a defenseman, boasting a +13 rating. His performance garnered him the Calder Trophy through a unanimous vote, surpassing notable competition from Ivan Demidov of the Montreal Canadiens and Beckett Sennecke of the Anaheim Ducks.
Both Demidov and Sennecke had excellent seasons as well, with Demidov notching 62 points (19 goals, 43 assists) and Sennecke clocking in at 60 points (23 goals, 37 assists). Both players were crucial in helping their teams reach the playoffs, even advancing to the second round.
With this win, Schaefer made history as the first unanimous Calder Trophy recipient since Teemu Selanne achieved the feat in the 1992-93 season with the Winnipeg Jets.
In a heartwarming gesture, Schaefer concluded his special day by visiting a local children’s hospital to share his new accolade.
