Vance and Putin’s representative support Witkoff against ‘warmongers’ in a Politico article

Vance, Putin envoy defend Witkoff from 'warmongers' in Politico piece

Vice President Vance Criticizes Politico Over Reporting on Diplomatic Efforts

Vice President Vance expressed his discontent with Politico on Friday, joining a group of prominent Kremlin negotiators and supporters of President Trump in their criticism. The discussion centered on an article addressing Steve Witkoff’s challenges in managing peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

Vance labeled the article as not just journalistic error but as an operation influenced by foreign interests aimed at undermining the administration and one of its key members. He shared his thoughts on his social media account.

Witkoff has reportedly traveled to Moscow multiple times over the last six months as part of conversations involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump.

After a recent summit in Alaska with Putin, Witkoff claimed that Russia had acknowledged the necessity of Western security in Ukraine, calling it a significant concession. Yet, in the following weeks, Russia has dismissed such assertions, insisting it would not allow this to happen while resisting face-to-face negotiations between Trump and both Putin and Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelensky.

The article in Politico referenced anonymous sources criticizing Witkoff for his perceived lack of experience. They described him as unreliable, suggesting he frequently changes his narratives and indicated that he was just seeking a visit with Putin.

Concerns were raised that Witkoff’s extensive diplomatic responsibilities might be too overwhelming for someone with a background in real estate.

Vance took issue with the anonymity of the critics quoted in the article and questioned the motivations of Felicia Schwartz, the Politico reporter responsible for the piece.

He defended Witkoff, stating that the diplomat accurately understood the implications of his discussions with the Russians, having personally witnessed the interactions.

Politico has been approached for their input on the matter.

Support for Witkoff came not only from Vance but also from others in Trump’s circle, including Donald Trump Jr. and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Vance’s statement described Witkoff as a critical asset.

Kiril Dmitriev, the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and part of the Russian delegation in Ukraine, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that the media’s portrayal of Witkoff was misleading and orchestrated by those opposed to peace.

The situation remains tense, as the United Nations reports approximately 14,000 Ukrainian civilian deaths since Russia’s invasion over three years ago. Recently, Russia conducted significant airstrikes in Kiev, resulting in multiple casualties.

While Trump has previously advocated for a quick ceasefire, his stance shifted after meeting with Putin, moving away from that demand. This week, he expressed uncertainty regarding the likelihood of a meeting between Putin and Zelensky, despite Russia’s insistence on a desire to conclude the conflict.

“War is unpredictable,” Trump remarked. “You never know how things will unfold.” He suggested that Putin’s visit to Alaska carried important implications.

Witkoff also met with Andry Yahmack, Zelensky’s chief advisor, in New York on Friday to further discussions on the peace agreement. Post-war security guarantees remain important to Ukraine, Europe, and the U.S., viewed as essential for discussions on any territorial concessions.

Zelensky expressed optimism about potential meetings with European leaders in the upcoming week, hoping to advance these critical discussions.
