The Excitement of Jonah Tong’s MLB Debut

This was it—only one chance this year at Citi Field. The crowd erupted when Juan Soto struck out.

After a long stretch in the bottom of the inning, the Mets delivered a powerful attack, leaving the 42,112 fans thrilled to see Jonah Tong pitch again.

On that vibrant evening in Queens, the sold-out crowd clearly rallied behind their team’s starting pitcher. Tong, just 22 years old, is already gaining a reputation for both his talent and his engaging demeanor.

Clearly, there’s hope for the Mets’ future, and Friday’s game was a glimpse of what may lie ahead.

Tong’s MLB debut was promising, if not flawless. The game featured a whopping 19-9 score against the Marlins, with five Mets batters determining the outcome early on.

By the end of the night, the Mets set a new franchise record for runs at home, giving Lewis Torrence a taste of pitching in the big leagues.

Maybe they were trying to make up for past failures against Jacob DeGrom, but the Mets quickly put five runs on the board.

As Soto approached the mound, the crowd leaped to their feet. After another impressive performance, Tong returned to the rubber.

As the best minor league pitcher heading into the big leagues, he faced first-day nerves. A shaky half-inning didn’t help, and the defense behind him struggled a bit. Yet, his talent was evident, leading the team to utilize Nolan McLean during a critical playoff push.

Once his five innings were done—after his three strikeouts to wrap up Liam Hicks—home plate umpire Andy Fletcher noted the excitement in the crowd. Tong ended his debut allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits, with no walks and six strikeouts. It’s noteworthy that he hadn’t allowed four runs in any of his previous 22 starts, but errors behind him played a role in that outcome.
