AI in Government: Sweden’s Prime Minister’s Approach

In their co-authored book, “A Dark Future”, Glenn Beck and Justin Haskins foresaw a time when leaders would turn to artificial intelligence for guidance in governance. Just a couple of years after its release, that notion appears to be manifesting.

Earlier this month, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson revealed in an interview with a local financial paper, Dagens Industri, that he often utilizes AI platforms like ChatGPT and Lechat to gather additional insights for policy-making. Before introducing new policies, he consults these AI tools, asking questions like, “What have others done? Is there any reason to think we shouldn’t proceed?” Haskins noted that even Kristersson’s advisors use AI as a consultation tool.

While Kristersson insists he won’t blindly follow AI advice or share classified information with these systems, he acknowledges that there are significant concerns surrounding such reliance on technology.

Haskins emphasizes that Sweden might not be the first nation to employ AI in governance, but it’s certainly the first to openly admit it. He speculates that many politicians in the U.S. are undoubtedly using AI but aren’t forthcoming about it. This, he cautions, poses serious implications down the line.

While Glenn sees no inherent issue with Kristersson employing AI as a resource, he believes the crux of the problem lies in what might unfold subsequently. He expresses concern that AI may one day be viewed as superior to human judgment and experience. “That’s when control is lost,” he warns.

In a more troubling observation, both Beck and Haskins touched on the potential for AI systems to provide misleading or false information. Haskins stated, “Today’s AI can fabricate details, creating false sources or distorting facts.” Glenn added, “It simply tells you what you want to hear.”

This situation raises alarm bells, as AI’s capacity to influence public opinion could be unprecedented, affecting large populations simultaneously. With AI evolving, its agendas may diverge from human objectives, possibly developing self-serving motivations, contributing to growing worries.

As Haskins pointedly remarked, this is the reality we already inhabit—it’s no longer a theoretical concern. To delve deeper into their discussion, you can check out the video linked above.
