Fantasy Football Draft Insights
As the fantasy football draft season heats up, many players are faced with some crucial decisions, especially when it comes to choosing between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of Thursday’s season opener.
Understanding when changes in the quarterback ranks will occur is vital for building a solid fantasy roster. This becomes even more critical as mid-season benchings can thrust new quarterbacks into the limelight, affecting the overall fantasy landscape.
Here’s a look at some starting quarterbacks who might find themselves on the bench at various points in the regular season, alongside potential backups ready to step in.
Joe Flacco, Cleveland Browns
Flacco appears to be a prime candidate for this scenario, as he is set to start for the Browns in their week one matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. At 40 years old, this Super Bowl champion is back with the team after a busy offseason. He outshone competitors like Dillon Gabriel, Chedure Sanders, and Kenny Pickett.
The Browns’ situation has arisen primarily due to Deshaun Watson’s Achilles injury, prompting a deeper look at their available options this season. Flacco will likely find himself benched at some point, with Gabriel stepping in as he has officially been named the backup. Looking ahead, if the Browns struggle, we might see a quarterback switch by their week 10 game against the New York Jets.
Daniel Jones, Indianapolis Colts
In another intriguing quarterback battle in the AFC, Jones secured the starting position in Indianapolis, beating out Anthony Richardson during training camp. After signing a one-year deal, Jones is keen to prove himself following his exit from the New York Giants last season.
While the Colts faced criticism for shelving the fourth overall pick from two years ago, general manager Chris Ballard insists they still believe in Richardson. However, it’s clear that Jones has limitations as a passer, and if the team’s performance falters, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Richardson take over.
Spencer Rattler, New Orleans Saints
In New Orleans, the starting quarterback role has gone to Rattler, who is entering his second season with the team. This decision came after a training camp competition among him, Jake Haener, and rookie Tyler Shough, largely triggered by Derek Carr’s retirement in May. Rattler will kick off the season against the Arizona Cardinals.
The choice to start Rattler is particularly interesting because Shough was just drafted in the second round this year and is only a year younger. Rattler’s brief experience last season might play a role, but if the Saints struggle, Shough could easily be given a chance.
Russell Wilson, New York Giants
After his time with the Seahawks, Wilson is now with the New York Giants, with the season opener against Washington’s Commanders ahead. Following a year spent in Pittsburgh, this 36-year-old veteran is expected to start, though rookie Jackson Dart is lurking right behind him.
The Giants traded up in the draft to select Dart from Ole Miss, and there’s a possibility he could take over if Wilson doesn’t perform well. The early part of the schedule presents tough matchups, and if the Giants aren’t in playoff contention, it would make sense to turn to the rookie.
