The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has stepped in to offer protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris after President Trump decided to cancel her Secret Service security. According to law enforcement sources cited by the Los Angeles Times, this offer came after discussions between Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
The CHP did not provide additional details when contacted for comment. A spokesperson from the CHP Office of Media Relations stated, “To pay tribute, the California Highway Patrol has not commented on security arrangements.” Moreover, Newsom’s office, which needs to approve such protection, couldn’t be reached for immediate comments, and they also declined to elaborate to the Times.
Harris’s security was officially revoked in a letter labeled “Memorandum for the Secretary of Homeland Security,” and her protection is set to conclude on September 1. According to a copy obtained by CNN, the letter stated, “You are permitted to cease security-related procedures previously approved by the memorandum of understanding for the following individuals, effective September 1, 2025, beyond what is required by law: Former Vice President Kamala D. Harris.”
Typically, former Vice Presidents receive security for six months post their administration, but Biden had previously extended this protection for a year before his inauguration. Notably, he remains entitled to Secret Service protection throughout his life.
Mayor Bass criticized Trump’s choice to withdraw Harris’s Secret Service protection in a statement, emphasizing her commitment to collaborating with Newsom to safeguard Harris. “This is another act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation, such as firing and revoking security clearances,” Bass noted. “This endangers the former Vice President, and I’m keen to work with the governor to ensure her safety in Los Angeles.”
