Florida State Surprises Alabama in Season Opener

In an unexpected turn of events, Florida State’s new quarterback, Tommy Castellanos, showcased his skills by leading the Seminoles to a surprising 31-17 victory over No. 8 Alabama. This win ended Alabama’s impressive streak of 23 consecutive opening-game victories.

Although the Crimson Tide has historically participated in all their opening games for over two decades, Florida State came into this matchup with little momentum, having finished the previous season with only two wins and no ranking. Already, early losses have dimmed Alabama’s hopes of making it to the College Football Playoffs.

Once the final whistle blew, students and fans stormed the field at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, clearly reveling in the underdog victory.

With new offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn at the helm, Florida adopted a strong, physical play style right from the start. They amassed a total of 230 rushing yards throughout the game. Malzahn, who had been head coach at Auburn before moving to UCF, seems to have brought a new energy to the program.

The last time Alabama lost its season opener was back in 2001 against UCLA, so this defeat was particularly notable. Coach Karen DeBoer, facing backlash for his performance after replacing the legendary Nick Saban, found his second season starting off under immense pressure.

Castellanos, a transfer from Boston College, carried the ball 16 times and completed nine out of 14 passes for 152 yards. His performance notably marked Florida State’s first win against a top-ranked opponent since the 2023 ACC Championship when they defeated No. 19 Louisville.

Next week, Alabama will look to bounce back as they host Louisiana Monroe, while Florida State will stay home to face East Texas A&M.
