Flotilla to Gaza Abandons Journey Due to Weather
Greta Samberg, a Swedish activist, and the convoy of boats purportedly delivering aid had to turn back shortly after leaving Spain on Sunday because of unfavorable weather conditions.
A fleet of around 30 vessels, loaded with food and medicine, departed from Barcelona, Catalonia, intending to reach the Gaza Strip.
However, after just a few hours at sea, the captain deemed the windy weather too dangerous, prompting the group to return to port. As stated by the organizers, “Due to these dangerous conditions, we conducted a sea trial before deciding to return and wait out the storm.”
This return, they explained, was necessary to avoid risking complications with the small boats involved.
This incident comes amid allegations that Israel is obstructing aid deliveries to Gaza. Israeli officials, however, have rejected these claims, instead blaming Hamas for hampering aid shipments intended for Palestinians.
The convoy included notable figures such as Ada Kollow, a former leftist mayor of Barcelona, alongside activist Greta Samberg.
Before the journey, Samberg commented, “This project signifies a global uprising of people. When the government fails, the people will step in. We can’t ignore the atrocities or the alleged genocides happening.”
Samberg, known for her alarming climate activism, has been increasingly vocal against Israel, which often faces accusations of committing genocide.
This wasn’t Samberg’s first attempt to reach Hamas-controlled areas by sea; she had previously tried in June but was detained and deported by Israel.
During her detention, Israeli authorities showcased footage of incidents involving Hamas militants. However, Samberg and other activists reportedly chose not to view it, continuing to accuse Israel of “inviting” them into conflict.
As reported, the fleet plans to try sailing to Gaza again on Monday.
