A Long Island school's innovative security system: 'Going to save lives'

Long Island Schools have announced the implementation of what they claim is one of the most sophisticated security systems in the United States, featuring auto-lock doors and rapid threat assessment capabilities.

“This technology is going to save lives,” commented Lee Mandel, CEO of Xsponse, as they revealed the system just before the new school year at Plainedge High School.

Following a recent tragic mass shooting event, each classroom at the North Massapequa campus is now equipped with advanced video monitors. These monitors facilitate immediate access to the auto-lock feature and provide critical visuals during emergencies.

“Our classrooms essentially become a hub for first responders,” Mandel emphasized, noting the ease of communication this system offers.

School personnel, identified by unique Smart-ID badges, can send announcements and livestream feeds to help keep students informed during dangerous situations.

The badges come with an alert button, similar to a life alert device. Pressing it sends precise GPS coordinates of the emergency location to responders, complete with a color-coded campus map shared with authorities. “This could greatly enhance the speed at which first responders react,” said Mandel.

Additionally, these badges can also communicate with devices located in classrooms, ensuring everyone has access to the necessary support during a crisis.

The system operates independently of WiFi, relying instead on a wired connection that can be monitored from the school’s main office. High-definition monitors, prominently placed in each classroom, feature privacy shields that can be activated during lockdowns.

Superintendent Salina mentioned that the initiative has received strong backing from both parents and the community. “Everyone understands the importance of making school a safer environment for our kids,” he said.

To prevent misuse, the Xsponse system is designed to recognize aggressive behaviors and vocal tones, capturing images of anyone interacting with the devices.

It also includes smoke detection capabilities within the school’s ventilation system, identifying smoking incidents without relying on visible detectors. Anti-drug measures are being tested, including fentanyl detection, which brings a critical dimension to school safety efforts.

Key Supporters

The push for Xsponse is supported by parents who tragically lost their children in the 2018 Parkland shooting, aiming to establish a model for schools nationwide. Andrew Pollack, who lost his daughter in the tragedy, is collaborating with Xsponse to promote safer school environments.

“I believe my daughter would want me to make a real difference,” Pollack stated, reflecting on his initiative. “The response at Plainedge’s board meeting was overwhelming—everyone wanted to learn more about this system.”

Ryan Petty, who also lost his daughter and now serves on the Florida State Board of Education, underlined how critical every second can be when it comes to emergency responses. “In Parkland, it was all over in under six minutes,” he noted, highlighting the importance of efficient response systems.

Local celebrity Jogannaskoli, known for his role in “The Sopranos,” is involved as a parent ambassador for the initiative, driven by concern for his high school daughter. “It makes me feel a lot better knowing my child is in a safer environment,” he expressed.

Salina acknowledged the efforts of Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who recently announced a new strategic response unit aimed at enhancing local school safety. “I’ve got them on speed dial,” the superintendent remarked, reflecting his commitment to ensuring immediate assistance when needed.
