Panthers’ Ekwonu Faces Recovery After Emergency Surgery

The Carolina Panthers might be facing some challenges ahead of their season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. It turns out, offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu underwent emergency appendectomy surgery just last week.

At 24, Ekwonu reported to the team last weekend with stomach pain, leading the medical staff to suggest he undergo surgery right away. Following this, head coach Dave Canales mentioned on Wednesday that Ekwonu’s status for the game would be evaluated daily as they approach kickoff.

Interestingly, he was absent from practice on Monday, which has fans and the team a bit on edge. Ekwonu was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and had shown resilience in his first three seasons, starting all games in his first two years and 15 out of 17 last year. His consistency was something to admire, so this situation is definitely concerning.

Recovery times from an appendectomy can vary quite a bit. For example, Minka Fitzpatrick, a safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, returned in just eight days back in 2022. But, well, it’s not the same for everyone. There have been players who took much longer to get back on the field after such a procedure.

If Ekwonu isn’t able to play against the Jaguars, it’s likely that Yosh Nijman will step in. Nijman, who is entering his sixth season, began his career with the Green Bay Packers before joining the Panthers, making his experience valuable in this situation. He has experience as well, starting three games last season when Taylor Moton was out.

The Panthers are scheduled to take on the Jaguars on September 7 at 1 p.m. It’s a pivotal moment, and fans hope to see Ekwonu back in action shortly.
