Micah Parsons’ Injury Concerns Ahead of NFL Debut

Micah Parsons’ back issues might be more significant than previously thought. Initially, his “back tightness” label during Dallas Cowboys training camp raised some eyebrows. Now, it seems the latest Green Bay Packers edge rusher could be facing a need for epidurals to participate in his debut against the Detroit Lions this Sunday.

Reports indicate that Parsons is managing an L4/L5 facet joint sprain. He may require injections to play effectively. In addition to that, he has been prescribed a five-day course of prednisone, an anti-inflammatory medication aimed at alleviating his back pain. Until last Thursday, Parsons was undergoing physical therapy with the Cowboys after a complicated trade involving two first-round draft picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

Interestingly, Parsons was spotted at Packers practice on Monday. This was his first appearance during the preseason, having missed earlier sessions due to contract negotiations with Dallas. He participated as one of the limited players present.

Dak Prescott, the Cowboys quarterback, mentioned he wasn’t surprised by the trade that sent Parsons to the Packers. However, the uncertainty around his availability for the start of the season looms large.

The Packers made an unexpected move by acquiring Parsons, which caught even Cowboys owner Jerry Jones off guard. The deal included trading four Pro Bowl players and two All-Pro edge rushers, resulting in Parsons receiving a record-setting four-year, $188 million contract, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

This contract, surpassing earlier records—like the $41 million for Pittsburgh Steelers star T.J. Watt—adds significant pressure on Parsons. His new teammates are eager to see how he can enhance their defense. For instance, Rashid Walker, a fellow Pennsylvania alumni, believes Parsons could greatly contribute to their Super Bowl aspirations.

Looking towards the season opener, the key for the Packers is Parsons’ health. As the week unfolds leading up to the game, his situation will be closely monitored.
