Woody Allen’s Praise for Trump
Woody Allen recently shared some surprising compliments about President Trump, noting his acting skills and a certain “charismatic quality” he showcased in films directed by Allen.
During an appearance on comedian Bill Maher’s podcast, “Club Random,” the filmmaker expressed admiration for Trump’s cameo in the 1998 movie “Celebrities.”
“I’m proud to say I directed Trump,” the 89-year-old Allen declared on the podcast, which was released just this Monday.
“He was a joy to work with, quite the actor, and very polite. He knew his lines and hit his mark every time,” Allen remarked.
Despite the praise, Allen emphasized he wasn’t a “Trumper” himself, making a point to clarify that he had voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
“He was quite good on screen—persuasive and charismatic. It’s surprising he ventured into politics,” Allen commented, reflecting on the challenges that come with political life. “It’s just a bunch of headaches and tough choices.”
Apparently, Trump liked what he heard. He even shared the article containing Allen’s flattering comments.
Maher agreed with Allen’s perspective, suggesting that Trump’s personality has a theatrical quality to it. Allen, however, wasn’t bothered by this idea. “They all have to present a certain image for the public,” he quipped.
Allen joked about wanting to lead Trump, highlighting the unusual dynamics of the political landscape.
Earlier this year, Maher had dined with Trump at the White House and returned with a surprisingly positive review, which didn’t sit too well with some liberal viewers.
“The first thing that struck me was his laugh,” he mentioned during a monologue. “I’ve never seen him laugh like that in public. And I can spot fake laughter after 40 years of comedy.”
In “Celebrities,” Trump’s brief cameo shows him among a group of notable diners, casually discussing his ambitions. “I’m working on buying St. Patrick’s Cathedral,” he quipped, laughing off his reputation.
This was one of many such cameos for Trump, who, back then, was known more as a real estate mogul. He has also appeared in popular films like “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” “Eddie,” and “The Little Rascals.”
