US Open spectator seen taking Jannik Sinner's bag in odd incident

Another wild moment has fans buzzing, although thankfully, no kids were involved this time.

During Jannik Sinner’s emphatic win over Alexander Bublik on Monday, it appeared that some fans attempted to reach for something from a bag held by security, only to be quickly stopped.

What their intention was remains unclear, but the situation escalated quickly, leading Sinner to raise his hands defensively as security moved in.

Polish CEO Piotr Szczerek’s incident followed closely on the heels of Kamil Majchrzak’s encounter with young fans after his Thursday victory against Karen Khachanov.

When Szczerek’s actions drew attention, he found himself at the center of social media scrutiny and later issued an apology on his company’s Instagram.

He expressed regret, saying, “I want to sincerely apologize to the boy affected, his family, and all fans and players. I made a serious mistake; in my excitement after the match, I mistakenly thought that the tennis player was giving me his cap.”

In some ways, this fan might be lucky that he wasn’t able to follow through with his plan, much like Szczerek’s actions.

The situation caught the attention of many online, with a popular tweet by @olly_tennis_ amassing over 50,000 followers.

A video surfaced showing someone seemingly trying to take something from Sinner’s bag.

One observer noted, “This behavior has certainly made waves online, with the fan attempting to grab a towel… all caught on camera.”

Another commentator remarked, “It’s shameful. I’m relieved that security did their job, but it’s really inappropriate for anyone, regardless of age, to reach into Sinner’s personal space like that.”

The only real drama on Monday for Sinner occurred with these fans, as he decisively won the match 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, advancing to the quarter-finals of the US Open.

Next up, Sinner is set to compete against fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who is currently the 10th seed, on Wednesday.
