Florida Fined After Field Storming Incident
Florida has been hit with a $50,000 fine after fans rushed the field following their 31-17 win against Alabama on Saturday. This makes them the first team in the ACC to face such a penalty after a policy shift was enacted during a July meeting.
The ACC stated that the behavior of the fans breached their event security policy, which is ultimately aimed at ensuring the safety of athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators.
“The violation occurred when fans entered the field of play after the contest was over. The event security policy is designed to protect the safety and well-being of everyone involved,” they noted in their announcement.
The committee member, Jim Phillips, talked about the fines during the policy change announcement back in July. A two-year monitoring period means that schools will incur a $50,000 fine for their first offense, followed by escalating fines of $100,000 for a second violation and $200,000 for a third.
“Our Health and Safety Enhancement Initiative reflects our continuous responsibility to uphold integrity, prioritize the well-being of our programs and fans, and modernize our operations to adapt to the changing landscape of universities today,” Phillips explained then.
It’s worth mentioning that the ACC isn’t the only conference to implement policies aimed at curbing fan invasions of playing fields. In fact, just earlier this year, the SEC adopted a stricter policy that imposes a fine of $500,000 for such incidents, replacing an older system that started at a $100,000 fine for the first infraction.
