ICE chief takes issue with CBS for omitting Noem's remarks on immigration

Debate Over CBS News Editing of Kristi Noem’s Interview

Todd Lyon, the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), expressed disappointment on Tuesday regarding CBS News’ alleged editing of Kristi Noem’s comments during her appearance on “Face the Nation.” He indicated it was unfortunate that CBS would, reportedly, misrepresent her statements.

Noem took to social media to assert that CBS “whitewashed the truth,” particularly regarding her remarks about Kilmar Abrego Garcia and the concerns surrounding his threat to public safety. In response, CBS emphasized that their edits were made for time constraints and noted that the complete comments can be accessed on their online transcript and YouTube channel.

Lyon appeared on “American Newsroom” to back Noem, sidestepping any explanation from CBS. He lamented what he deemed a discouraging attempt to prevent Secretary Noem from providing important information about a serious criminal. “I mean, honestly, who really reads transcripts? Very few people,” he remarked, pointing out that the morning show attracts millions of viewers.

He praised Noem and the Trump administration for their level of transparency regarding ICE operations, particularly in connection to arrests and deportations, mentioning Garcia specifically. “Before, we were often defensive about media portrayals, but now, we aim to ensure that people understand what our ICE agents do daily,” Lyon stated. He also highlighted the necessity of deporting criminals like Garcia, who had a troubling history and was illicitly residing in the U.S.

In the aired clip, the question was posed about the government’s efforts to deport Garcia, but the segment was truncated, skipping over a comprehensive response before transitioning to another query regarding a potential deportation to Uganda.

Noem later shared her full remarks online. She detailed Garcia’s criminal background, including allegations of human trafficking and gang involvement, labeling him a significant danger.

Despite the criticism, CBS defended their editing process, asserting it adhered to the network’s standards. They maintained that the interview with Noem was edited for brevity and that the complete interview was made available on YouTube and CBS’s website.
