Nolan McLean Impresses in His Starting Role
Nolan McLean left quite an impression on a Detroit batsman and team announcer during Tuesday’s game.
The rookie pitcher had a standout performance, hitting seven batters in a convincing 12-5 win over the Mets. Highlights included a stunning moment in the fifth inning.
“What was it? What was it?” Benetti exclaimed as he watched Colt Keith swing at a 92 mph sinker from McLean. “It’s a sinker, but it’s like sparkling,” he added, showcasing his astonishment.
McLean kicked off the inning by putting Dillon Dingler away in six pitches and then quickly fanned Trey Sweeney in just four.
This impressive display left Keith swinging, wrapping up a remarkable inning.
With this victory, McLean notched his fourth straight win, becoming the first pitcher since 2014 to achieve the feat in his first four Major League starts.
Currently, McLean boasts a 1.37 ERA. On Tuesday, he finished the game giving up only two runs on three hits over six innings.
Though he faced some difficulty at the beginning, walking back-to-back batters in the first inning—both of whom eventually scored—he managed to regain his composure.
But then, McLean really turned things around, helping the Mets secure their second consecutive win in Detroit.
“I started losing confidence in my sweepers and curveballs early because I wasn’t locating well, but then I went back and tried again,” he reflected.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised McLean’s “impressive outing,” noting that he recognized the necessity for adjustments.
“I thought he attacked well, and once we took the lead, we kept pushing,” Mendoza detailed. “He switched to the sinker when needed, mixed in the sweepers and curveballs, and before long, it was six innings, giving us a real shot at winning the game.”
