Graham Linehan Thinking About Taking Legal Action Against London Police for Arrest Over Trans Tweets

Graham Linehan, the creator of Father Ted, is reportedly mulling a lawsuit against the London Metropolitan Police following his arrest this week by armed officers due to tweets that criticized transgender issues.

The arrest, which has stirred significant backlash, seems to reflect a growing discontent with how the left-leaning government and police handle such matters.

Details of the incident indicate that Linehan was taken into custody over three posts he made on X, including a joke about a biological man in a women’s restroom.

According to the Daily Mail, Linehan’s legal team is exploring whether his free speech rights were violated, particularly in connection with the conditions of his bail in addition to claims that he incited violence through humorous commentary.

“This gave me a chilling insight into the absurd situation Britain has become,” Linehan remarked.

“The Free Speech Union is supporting me, providing legal guidance against unlawful arrests and claims regarding my detention, aiming to ensure others aren’t treated as criminals for expressing themselves online,” he further stated.

The reaction to the arrest of the BAFTA-winning writer has sent shockwaves through the UK’s political landscape, raising concerns about the extent of free speech limitations in the country.

Met Police Chief Mark Rowley responded by affirming that officers should not engage in policing these culture wars and proposed stricter guidelines for interventions in these types of cases. He also urged the government to clarify the laws governing speech restrictions.

Despite this, Rowley defended the rationale behind Linehan’s arrest, asserting that police had valid reasons to believe a public order offense occurred.

Meanwhile, the left-leaning government seems to recognize that censorship may have gone too far. Health Secretary Wes Street commented that following Linehan’s arrest, the Cabinet has begun re-evaluating the laws related to online speech.

He expressed that focusing on policing social media posts is detracting from more pressing public safety issues, which is an area that needs addressing. Reports note that British police made numerous arrests related to offensive online content, totaling over 12,000 last year.

This incident has spurred criticism regarding the country’s commitment to free speech, with former Prime Minister Liz Truss stating that attempts to silence the populace resemble a totalitarian regime. She indicated that change must be pursued swiftly.

Current Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch also criticized the police response, asserting that it’s politics rather than policing when multiple officers are utilized for such arrests, especially given that there are significant ongoing public safety concerns that go unresolved.

However, not everyone agrees with Linehan’s stance. Zach Polanski, the leader of the progressive Green Party, deemed Linehan’s posts as “wholly unacceptable” and described the police’s actions as “appropriate.”
