Jim Walden Calls for Unity Against Zoran Mamdani in NYC Mayoral Race
Jim Walden, an independent candidate for mayor in New York City, is advocating for unity among opponents to challenge Zoran Mamdani.
Once a lawyer at the federal level, Walden is currently polling near the bottom, with averages just above 1%. In a crowded race featuring prominent figures such as Mamdani, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, and the incumbent Eric Adams, Walden has had difficulty gaining traction and support for his campaign.
This appeal for unity marks a significant move toward consolidating opposition against Mamdani ahead of the upcoming general election in November.
Walden emphasized that anyone voting for the best candidate against Mamdani should be direct and that others should step aside. He shared his sentiments in a post on a social media platform on Tuesday, stating that his principles must prevail over his own ambitions.
“I’ve maintained that a one-on-one race in November is crucial; otherwise, Trojans could dominate City Hall,” Walden expressed. “I cannot justify further spending of public funds on unrealistic hopes as I’ve been drawn into this contest.”
Walden’s announcement could be seen as a concrete move towards what critics of Mamdani hope to achieve. Some opponents of the Democratic contenders, who label themselves as democratic socialists, have voiced worries about the potential for vote splitting among Cuomo, Adams, Republican entrant Curtis Sliwa, and Walden.
However, it’s unlikely that Walden’s departure would dramatically alter the voting landscape, as his support has been minimal.
Cuomo, consistently polling second, mentioned that Walden’s proposal is worth considering. Both Adams and Sliwa seem steadfast in their positions.
Cuomo’s campaign spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, commended Walden for pausing his campaign: “Today, Jim Walden set aside his personal ambitions for the good of New York City. His choice underscores the serious threat posed by Zoran Mamdani—a 33-year-old socialist lacking substantial work experience or accomplishments, and whose ideology risks New York City’s future.”
In response, a spokesperson for the Mamdani campaign, Dora Pekec, claimed that support for their effort is increasing, despite the “billionaire class” attempting to rally opposition against him.
