A significant controversy erupted when a fashion giant came under fire for seemingly promoting a product linked to the accused murderer of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Luigi Mangione.
Images of the suspect wearing a white short-sleeved shirt circulated widely after it appeared on the Chinese retailer’s website.
The shirt, originally priced over $10, was quickly taken down, and the company announced an investigation into the matter.
As Shein uploads a vast array of products daily, it remains unclear how long the shirt was available for sale.
The product description for the “Men’s New Spring/Summer Blue Ditsy Floral White Shirt” revealed it had nearly sold out in sizes, except for XXL.
Other items on Shein’s platform appeared to include Mangione’s likeness in promotional material, leading some to speculate that the ads were generated using AI.
Shein has gained immense popularity among Gen Z and younger millennials, primarily by offering affordable and rapidly changing fashion trends.
However, the company faces heavy scrutiny for its business practices, including ongoing allegations of forced labor in its factories and the broader negative impact of fast fashion on the environment.
A spokesperson for Shein stated, “The image in question was provided by a third-party vendor and was removed immediately upon discovery. We maintain strict standards for all listings, and we will conduct thorough investigations, enhance our monitoring processes, and take appropriate action against vendors as necessary.”
The ads drew significant backlash and confusion online.
One user remarked on X, “Shein uses Luigi Mangione’s AI-generated photos to market clothes—what a ridiculous way to start an advertisement.” Another commented, “Fashion has gone wild with Shein using Mangione’s pictures for selling shirts.” A third user added, “The sellers at Shein will do anything for attention.”
Mangione, aged 27, was arrested in December, charged with the murder of Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges in April and is currently awaiting trial, with prosecutors indicating they may seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
