Federal Agents Consideration for New Orleans Amid Crime Concerns
President Donald Trump is exploring the possibility of sending federal law enforcement to another city plagued by violent crime—this time, New Orleans—instead of focusing solely on Chicago. This comes on the heels of his claimed success in tackling crime in various regions.
On Wednesday, Trump indicated that he could deploy federal agents to New Orleans, citing a positive relationship with Louisiana’s Republican Governor Jeff Landry.
“New Orleans has a crime rate of 65 per 1,000 residents, ranking it among the highest in the nation,” he noted.
“We’re intent on going somewhere like Chicago or New Orleans,” Trump stated from the Oval Office, referring to Landry’s governance. “So, I’m looking at Louisiana. New Orleans has issues with crime. It can be addressed in about two weeks; it’s easier than in D.C.”
Interestingly, initial reports characterized New Orleans’ crime situation as “very tough” and “very bad.” While some statistics suggest a slight decline in crime in 2024, other measures point to ongoing concerns. It aligns with Trump’s assertion that New Orleans has a significant crime issue.
According to crime metrics, New Orleans is not only one of the cities with a high crime rate but is also recognized for its liberal political stance, ranking 17th among America’s most liberal cities.
Attempts to reach Governor Landry and Mayor LaToya Cantrell for comments on possible federal law enforcement assistance have gone unanswered.
Despite pushback from local Illinois politicians, including Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson, Trump remains committed to alleviating crime in metro areas like Chicago.
“We can fix Chicago. All they must do is ask us to come,” he said. “We may not endorse some of these politicians, but please tell us who supports the folks in Chicago.”
