Trump Seeks Supreme Court Review of $5 Million Verdict

Former President Donald Trump has expressed his plan to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a $5 million civil verdict linked to author E. Jean Carroll’s case against him.

In a recent legal filing, Trump’s attorneys requested an extension to formally file their petition by November 10. The current deadline is set for September 11.

“President Trump intends to seek from this court a review of important issues arising from the Second Circuit’s false decision,” one of his lawyers noted in an application dated August 27. This application was not disclosed by the Supreme Court until recently.

A federal judge in New York City ruled back in January that Trump owes Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages and an additional $65 million in punitive damages.

While he was found not guilty of rape, the court still ruled against him on charges of sexual abuse and defamation, despite a lack of physical evidence. Carroll’s account from 1996, alleging that Trump raped and sexually assaulted her at the Bergdorf Goodman Department Store, was central to the case.

The compensatory damages were intended to address the harm to Carroll’s reputation as well as the emotional distress caused by Trump’s statements. Despite these findings, Trump has consistently denied all allegations made by Carroll.
