Florida Surgeon General Announces End to Vaccine Mandates
On Wednesday, Florida’s Surgeon General, Joseph Ladapo, declared that the state will be eliminating all vaccine mandates. This announcement has drawn criticism from certain public health experts but has found support among parents who believe they shouldn’t be required to vaccinate their healthy children.
“All of them. All of them,” Ladapo stated regarding the vaccine mandates during a press conference, earning applause from the audience. “Every last one of them is wrong and drips with disdain and slavery.”
However, it’s important to note that the state won’t be banning vaccinations entirely, and efforts will be coordinated with Governor Ron DeSantis.
“Who am I as a government or anyone else, who am I as a man standing here now, to tell you what you should put in your body?” Ladapo asked. “Who am I to tell you what your child should put in [their] body? I don’t have that right.”
Currently, students in Florida public schools are required to be vaccinated, with specific details available on the Florida Department of Health website.
“You want to put whatever different vaccines in your body, God bless you. I hope you make an informed decision,” Ladapo commented. “You don’t want to put whatever vaccines in your body, God bless you. I hope you make an informed decision. That’s how it should be.”
Dr. Robert Malone, who has recently been appointed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to the CDC’s independent vaccine advisory committee, expressed his support after speaking with Ladapo, labeling him as “a measured scientist who is on fire to change the system for the better.”
Malone plays a significant role in shaping CDC recommendations regarding vaccine eligibility and has been known to criticize mRNA vaccines.
Despite the support from some, the decision has faced backlash as well.
“The idea that children would be allowed to go to school unvaccinated is absolutely frightening,” remarked Dr. Richard Besser, a former acting director of the CDC and current CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Moreover, Dr. Susan Kressly, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, emphasized the “critical role” that childhood vaccinations play in her statement.
“We are concerned that today’s announcement by Gov. DeSantis will put children in Florida public schools at higher risk for getting sick and have ripple effects across their community,” Kressly stated.
Ladapo’s announcement aligns with Governor DeSantis’ launch of Florida’s “Make America Healthy Again” commission, which aims to execute initiatives set by President Donald Trump and Health Secretary Kennedy at the state level.
This commission will be led by First Lady Casey DeSantis and Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, with additional members including Ladapo, Secretary of the Agency for Health Care Administration Shevaun Harris, and Secretary of the Department of Children and Families Taylor Hatch.
