An Alabama man was arrested by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office after he showed up at a California monastery equipped with various weapons, including brass knuckles, knives, and body armor, following threats made in an email.
Joshua Michael Richardson was taken into custody late last month after the authorities received reports regarding a threatening email he sent to St. Michael’s Abbey on August 28.
Investigators noted that the email contained intimidating language. This situation escalated when Richardson traveled from Alabama to Southern California and went directly to the monastery. A priest there recognized him and reported this to authorities two days later, prompting a swift investigation.
According to Sergeant Gerald McCann of the Orange County Register, it’s believed Richardson arrived in California the same day he visited the monastery. Law enforcement quickly located him and took him into custody.
During a search of his vehicle, authorities discovered weapons and tactical gear, which included large-capacity magazines and other items.
After his arrest, Richardson was booked at the Orange County Jail. On September 1, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office charged him with several offenses, such as possession of brass knuckles and a crime threat.
In a statement, a spokesman acknowledged the seriousness of the threat and commended local law enforcement for their rapid response.
“The Parish of Orange takes this threat seriously,” the spokesman said, noting an increase in attacks on churches nationwide, including recent shootings in other areas.
The Sheriff’s Department has heightened patrols in the vicinity of the monastery, which is situated on a sizable property, although the abbey has also improved its own security measures.
Authorities highlighted the need for community awareness and vigilance, advising that any unusual behavior, messages, or actions should be reported promptly. They emphasized that community members should trust their instincts if something feels off.
The investigation into the matter is still ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
