Former NBA player Desmond Mason taken into custody on felony theft charge

Former NBA player Desmond Mason was taken into custody in Oklahoma City over the weekend due to a felony warrant issued in Texas.

According to various reports, Mason was arrested by local police on Thursday for felony theft of property following an incident that dates back to spring 2025.

Pursuant to the arrest, Mason was apprehended in the Bricktown area of downtown Oklahoma City and later transported to the Oklahoma County Detention Center. However, before his booking, he needed treatment for medical issues at a nearby hospital.

After being booked, it was noted that he was considered a flight risk.

In January, a couple from Collin County, Texas, filed a complaint with the Melissa Police Department. They claimed they hired Mason in March 2025 to produce sports memorabilia, paying him nearly $9,823.

The memorabilia and accompanying authentication documents had an estimated value of around $40,000.

Allegedly, Mason provided them with a certificate in April that stated he had completed the work and would deliver the finished pieces. However, he later ceased all communication with them.

By January of this year, Mason apparently reinitiated contact with the couple to explain the delay.

A warrant for his arrest was issued in February.

This isn’t Mason’s first encounter with the law; he has previously faced jail time for contempt of court related to his divorce from ex-wife Andrea Mason.

Drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in 2000, Mason enjoyed a decade-long NBA career and became the first player in franchise history to win the NBA Dunk Contest during the 2000-01 season. He was traded to the Bucks in 2003, played there until 2005, and afterwards, was sent to the New Orleans Hornets.

Mason made a return to the Bucks before the 2007-08 season and played a brief stint with the Thunder in the 2008-09 season. He participated in only five games for the Kings in 2009, being released early in November of the 2009-10 season.
