Kennedy to Testify on Healthcare Issues
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set to appear before Capitol Hill on Thursday, just a week after disruptions affected the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
A member of the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees HHS, will question Kennedy regarding President Donald Trump’s healthcare agenda.
While the committee doesn’t directly handle CDC oversight, it’s expected that the recent dismissal of former CDC director Susan Monares will significantly shape the questions that both Republican and Democrat lawmakers ask Kennedy, especially in light of his tenure at the agency.
Senators Demand Accountability in CDC Operations
Senate Majority Leader John Toon commented that Kennedy should expect tough questions from the committee, particularly regarding complaints lodged against Monares that surfaced just before her firing.
“He has to take responsibility… we’ll verify these matters,” the South Dakota Republican remarked. “We do extensive work to vet them. And how long have they been in their role?”
There’s been a lot of speculation about what led to Monares’ termination, especially considering her differing approach to vaccines.
Senator Bill Cassidy, who previously chaired the Senate Health Committee and was instrumental in Kennedy’s appointment, plans to scrutinize his former colleague at Thursday’s hearing.
Recently, Cassidy urged postponement of a meeting set for the federal Vaccine Advisory Board, which is largely composed of candidates chosen by Kennedy, until essential oversight from the committee is established. He suggested that the board’s recommendations could be disregarded.
Cassidy Emphasizes Transparency for Child Health
Cassidy told Fox News Digital that he is formulating plans regarding what surveillance might entail. He noted his support for Kennedy and Trump’s “radical transparency” commitment, but he stressed that the primary concern is child health.
“This isn’t about party lines or internal conflicts,” Cassidy said. “It’s about the health of our children and grandchildren, who are vulnerable to diseases that could be prevented with vaccines. We need to uncover the truth here.”
He raised concerns that members of the Advisory Committee on Vaccination Practices were expected to review vaccine recommendations, questioning the sources for these decisions, especially with several senior CDC officials having left following Monares’s dismissal.
“We require fundamental transparency regarding the scientific basis for these recommendations,” he added. “Who are the political appointees making these scientific decisions? Are they qualified?”
Past CDC Directors Voice Concerns
Senator Steve Daines, also on the Senate Finance Committee, indicated his inquiries would focus on the safety of the abortion drug Mifepristone, but acknowledged that discussions regarding Kennedy’s leadership at CDC and HHS are warranted.
“This is customary for a secretary, though it’s clear that many of these issues are linked to broader concerns. These questions will be posed, and I appreciate Kennedy being there to clarify his actions,” he remarked.
In defense of his strategies at the CDC, Kennedy argued in a recent Wall Street Journal piece that “President Trump tasked me with restoring trust and refocusing the CDC on its fundamental mission.”
He mentioned that steps have already been implemented to eliminate conflicts of interest and bureaucratic stagnation in government agencies, emphasizing that leaders who resisted change have been replaced.
“Most staff at the CDC are dedicated public servants,” Kennedy stated. “With this new mission, they can operate as scientists free from political pressures. The CDC will strive to regain its status as a global authority on infectious diseases.”
“Restoring public trust is crucial, and that process has begun,” he concluded. “It will continue until America’s health agencies recover their reputation for transparency and integrity.”
Fox News Digital reached out to HHS for further comments but did not receive an immediate reply.
