'Not Beneficial for America': Trump Administration Ends Deportation Safeguards for Venezuelans

Deportation Protections for Venezuelans Ended by Trump Administration

On Wednesday, the Trump administration announced the termination of deportation protections for many Venezuelans living in the United States.

Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has ended the 2021 designation of Venezuela’s Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This designation had allowed over 200,000 Venezuelans to remain in the U.S. without the threat of removal, including those who might have entered the country illegally.

According to the DHS, after consultations with the State Department and a review of the situation in Venezuela, Noem concluded that the country no longer qualifies for TPS. Moreover, the Secretary stated that continuing the 2021 designation doesn’t serve the best interests of the U.S.

She mentioned, “Given the irregular movement from Venezuela and the clear draw caused by temporary protected status, maintaining TPS for Venezuelan citizens undermines efforts to secure our southern borders and manage migration effectively.” This shift seems significant, resonating with broader immigration enforcement strategies.

The concept of TPS, initially established under the Immigration Act of 1990, has provided deportation protections and work permits for foreign nationals residing in the U.S. over the years. While the Biden administration had previously expanded TPS designations for various countries, it has faced criticism for not addressing the temporary nature of the program. For instance, some nationals from Honduras and Nicaragua have held TPS since 1999, although recent legal battles led to the end of protections in those countries under the Trump administration’s initiatives.

A spokesperson emphasized, “TPS was never meant to be a permanent asylum fix, but past administrations have effectively turned it into one—often without thorough evaluations.” Following his return to office, Trump sought to eliminate TPS in nations such as Haiti and Ukraine as part of a broader immigration enforcement plan.

DHS indicated that the TPS designations will officially expire on September 10th. The Trump administration is urging eligible Venezuelans to use the CBP Home app to facilitate departures, even offering free plane tickets and a $1,000 exit incentive for those who choose to leave.
