Law enforcement announced that a fugitive teenager was apprehended on Thursday, just days after a tragic shooting that claimed the life of his 69-year-old grandmother, Robin Wright, as she was innocently out for a walk.
The 18-year-old suspect was taken into custody by federal authorities and the NYPD, following the incident that occurred on August 27 at 12:25 PM.
The teenager was reportedly disenchanted when the Homeland Security Investigation, alongside the NYPD’s gang task force, intervened in what they deemed senseless violence.
“I just stood there and saw a friend while she was dead,” recounted Juanita Arnold, who was with Wright during the incident. “Was it because she was just out for lunch?”
“This was completely unnecessary. That woman never deserved to die like that,” Arnold added, expressing disbelief at the circumstances of Wright’s death.
Friends and neighbors described how Wright often took walks as part of her recovery from a recent leg surgery.
“She was eager to walk with me and have lunch,” Arnold explained. “After her surgery, she had worked hard to regain her strength. So I said I would join her for lunch. But she never got to have hers.”
Wright’s neighbor, Sonya Hampton, mentioned being with Wright as she took her last breaths. “I just came from the store and heard a gunshot. I turned around and saw where the bullet had hit. She was on the ground,” Hampton recalled.
The shooting occurred shortly after the teenage shooter and an accomplice attempted to rob someone in the area, according to law enforcement. Sources indicate that the victim confronted them, leading to gunfire.
Tragically, Wright was caught in the crossfire when the suspects opened fire on their intended target. Emergency services rushed her to Mount Sinai Morningside, but she could not be saved, officers confirmed.
Another suspect remains at large in connection with this incident, as per sources.
The arrest of the teen shooter followed closely after five other young suspects were charged with murder in a separate drive-by shooting on Labor Day that resulted in one death and four injuries outside a known marijuana spot in the Bronx.
“We’re watching the shooters get younger and younger,” remarked Mayor Eric Adams during an interview. “We are witnessing the direct impact of laws enacted both in Albany and in the city council.”
